THE HALCYOME
─────────────────────
A thick barrier of fog awaits those who sail or fly far enough out to sea in any direction. Its sheer scale is staggering, stretching from the ocean’s dark depths to the very heights of the firmament—beyond the clouds, beyond sight, beyond comprehension. To gaze upon it unprepared can be a harrowing experience, for one may find themselves questioning not only the existence of such an unearthly phenomenon, but also their own place in the world.
One of the great mysteries of Prism, the Halcyome was named by the Aegles, the first non-native race to cross through it from the other side. Every other non-native race that has arrived on Prism’s welcoming shores has done so in the same way: through the Halcyome.
Although it is common knowledge that the ancestors of today’s non-native races lost all memories of their original homeworlds on the other side of the Halcyome shortly after arriving in Prism, the vast majority attribute this memory loss to the journey’s toll, the hardships endured, and the anguish of leaving homes and histories behind.
While no one knows the true fate of those homeworlds, many assume they must have been destroyed—why else would their ancestors have fled through the Halcyome’s impenetrable veil, risking everything for a new beginning in Prism?
However, those with access to obscure knowledge of the Halcyome—and the intellect to draw their own conclusions—surmise that their ancestors’ memory loss might not have been a consequence of the journey’s many trials, but rather an effect of the Halcyome itself.
While the truth of their ancestors’ stolen past remains a matter of conjecture, there is one thing about the Halcyome that no one—scholar or otherwise—has ever disputed: anything—or anyone—that enters the Halcyome from this side, from Prism… never returns.
It is a fact observed time and again, with no evidence to the contrary.
